Bond (Finance) $92.4 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles In finance, a bond is a debt security, in which the authorized issuer owes the holders a debt and, depending on the terms of the bond, is obliged to pay interest (the coupon) and/or to repay the principal at a later date, termed maturity. A bond is a formal contract to repay borrowed money with interest at fixed intervals. Thus a bond is like a loan: the issuer is the borrower (debtor), the holder is the lender (creditor), and the coupon is the interest. Bonds provide the borrower with external funds to finance longterm investments, or, in the case of government bonds, to finance current expenditure. Certificates of deposit (CDs) or commercial paper are considered to be money market instruments and not bonds. Bonds must be repaid at fixed intervals over a period of time. Bonds and stocks are both securities, but the major difference between the two is that stockholders have an equity stake in the company (i.e., they are owners), whereas bondholders have a creditor stake in the company (i.e., they are lenders). Another difference is that bonds usually have a defined term, or maturity, after which the bond is redeemed, whereas stocks may be outstanding indefinitely. Finance Ethics: The Rationality of Virtue $63.65 The first book ever to integrate business ethics with financial economics, Finance Ethics shows how ethical behavior fits within the rational, profitmaximizing, finance paradigm. Dobson argues that even in economic terms the finance paradigm has a serious flaw: it views the firm and financial markets in general as contractual nexuses yet it fails to supply any adequate mechanisms for enforcing those contractual relations. Finance Ethics is therefore not just a moral critique of the finance paradigm, arguing that selfinterested profit making must be constrained by ethics. Rather, it is a critique from within that paradigm, in which truth becomes a rational mechanism to enforce contracts, and virtuous behavior is shown to make the most business sense. Project Finance $71.7 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Project finance is the long term financing of infrastructure and industrial projects based upon the projected cash flows of the project rather than the balance sheets of the project sponsors. Usually, a project financing structure involves a number of equity investors, known as sponsors, as well as a syndicate of banks that provide loans to the operation. The loans are most commonly nonrecourse loans, which are secured by the project assets and paid entirely from project cash flow, rather than from the general assets or creditworthiness of the project sponsors, a decision in part supported by financial modeling. The financing is typically secured by all of the project assets, including the revenueproducing contracts. Project lenders are given a lien on all of these assets, and are able to assume control of a project if the project company has difficulties complying with the loan terms. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F. Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 100 Publication Date: 2010/12/10 Language: English Dimensions: 6.00 x 9.02 x 0.24 inches |

Stochastic Processes with Applications to Finance $175.16 In recent years, modeling financial uncertainty using stochastic processes has become increasingly important, but it is commonly perceived as requiring a deep mathematical background. Stochastic Processes with Applications to Finance shows that this is not necessarily so. It presents the theory of discrete stochastic processes and their applications in finance in an accessible treatment that strikes a balance between the abstract and the practical. Using an approach that views sophisticated stochastic calculus as based on a simple class of discrete processes random walks the author first provides an elementary introduction to the relevant areas of real analysis and probability. He then uses random walks to explain the change of measure formula, the reflection principle, and the Kolmogorov backward equation. The BlackScholes formula is derived as a limit of binomial model, and applications to the pricing of derivative securities are presented. Another primary focus of the book is the pricing of corporate bonds and credit derivatives, which the author explains in terms of discrete default models. By presenting important results in discrete processes and showing how to transfer those results to their continuous counterparts, Stochastic Processes with Applications to Finance imparts an intuitive and practical understanding of the subject. This unique treatment is ideal both as a text for a graduatelevel class and as a reference for researchers and practitioners in financial engineering, operations research, and mathematical and statistical finance. Collateral (Finance) $92.4 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles In lending agreements, collateral is a borrowers pledge of specific property to a lender, to secure repayment of a loan. The collateral serves as protection for a lender against a borrowers risk of default that is, any borrower failing to pay the principal and interest under the terms of a loan obligation. If a borrower does default on a loan (due to insolvency or other event), that borrower forfeits (gives up) the property pledged as collateral and the lender then becomes the owner of the collateral. In a typical mortgage loan transaction, for instance, the real estate being acquired with the help of the loan serves as collateral. Should the buyer fail to pay the loan under the mortgage loan agreement, the ownership of the real estate is transferred to the bank. The bank uses a legal process called foreclosure to obtain real estate from a borrower who defaults on a mortgage loan obligation. Core Concepts of Personal Finance $162.59 Focus on practical approach to financial planning. Text discusses the real personal finance decisions students face and innovatively relies on web resources to provide students with the tools, information and skills to make these decisions. Emphasis on Decision Making. Instead of the use of traditional subtitles in each chapter (e.g., alternative forms of housing,, performing home affordability analysis ), the text uses questions as the leadin for each topic (e.g., should I rent or buy?, how do I bid on the property?) An entire chapter is devoted to the critical topic of time value of money (TVM) and it is integrated into later chapters where appropriate. The solutions to many problems (i.e. How much Life Insurance Should You Have?) are presented through calculators that incorporate time value of money into the computations. Thus, students who have a general concept of what time value of money means but have difficulty doing TVM problems are still able to get through the material deal effectively with the impact of TVM. Text is brief and applied. Instead of long narratives discussing terms and definitions, the text focuses on decisions that the student will be making during his or her lifetime, beginning with graduation and the selection of the first job. Each chapter has a theme of a person or couple needing to make decisions in that topic area. Key material is emphasized by its inclusion in the sample problems and the solutions to the sample problems. Congressional Budgeting: A Representational Perspective $110.68 In Congressional Budgeting, Patrick Fisher analyzes the problems inherent in the congressional budget process, and studies why congress makes the budgetary decisions that it does. In their desire to limit the tyranny of the majority, the framers of the Constitution designed a legislature that would be constrained and deliberate. While the institutional structure of Congress (i.e. bicameralism and the committee system) and American government in general (i.e. separation of powers) make the budget process more difficult, it does not make producing a sensible budget impossible. Fisher argues that it is the representational nature of Congress that makes budgeting such a flawed process. Budgeting requires Congress to compromise parochial interests for the well being of the entire nation, focusing on macrolevel budget decisions. It is the parochial nature of congressional budgeting that is key to understanding the predicament Congress confronts when budgeting. Pension Finance By Waring, M. Barton $93.99 Defined benefit pension plans are in a severe crisis. With nearly a 4 trillion deficit in the U.S. alone, Canada, the UK, Japan, and Holland also suffer from unfunded liabilities. In short, the pension crisis is nearly global in proportion, and there is little likelihood that plan sponsors will be able to come up with the funds to repair the damage. One of the major problems behind the crisis is the approach: pension plans use actuarial science as the basis of assumptions but are subject to the laws ofeconomic finance in terms of their returns. In short, there is a gap between the world presumed by actuaries who determine funding levels and the world as it come to be as determined by market performance and investment outcomes. Waring tackles this thorny issue head on. Well versed in both economic and actuarial science, he walks professionals through the differences and shows why plan sponsors need to focus on the economic account perspective to meaningfully measure present values. Complete coverage ofcredit risk and the discount rate to determine liability values is examined, contribution levels are then presented based on this revised approach to actuarial accounting. Pension plan sponsors and their employee representatives must face the economics and adjust their accounting and actuarial view to gain a true perspective on achieving sustainable benefit levels. Waring is one of the first investment professionals to tackle this controversial topic head on to present realistic solutions to potentially catastrophic problems looming in the very near term Author: Waring, M. Budgeting and Organizational Culture $116.3 Recently, public higher education institutions have increasingly turned their attention to incentive based budgeting models as internal resource allocation models. However, these models have been criticized for bringing market forces, competitiveness, and businesslike perceptions into the higher education environment. In recent years, the literature on incentive budgeting systems has grown; mostly, through institutional case studies. However, most of these studies focused on the formal structures and on the financial outcomes. The literature lacks any exploration of the effects that such changes have on an organizations culture. However, incentive based budgeting systems involve more than simply formulas. They also bring a new frame of mind into higher education organizations. Decentralization of the decisionmaking process is one such change that is attached to incentive based budgeting systems. Thus, incentive based budgeting models affect the whole institution, its formal and informal structures as well as its culture. This study focuses on responsibility center management (RCM) and its perceived effects on the culture of decisionmaking at a higher education institution.
